MIRACLES (BEFORE DEMATERIALIZATION)

Desire is there, but not capacity

Arumuga Mudaliar requested Vallalar for Kuligai mani (Magic beads that work in a mysterious way) for becoming rich. Vallalar kept two beads of pepper size in his hand. Mudaliar could hardly bear the beads and hence kept them down. Vallalar advised him that that was not the correct way and hence asked him to drop such desires.

Slip between finger and lip

Once, the devotees of Dharmasalai requested Vallalar to prescribe them a medicine for health, longevity and immune power. Vallalar told them about the benefits of Karisalai (a type of green) and its varieties. He mixed manure in the soil, planted karisalai & its varieties and asked them to take care of the plants and protect them from Cattle. Accordingly the devotees also took care of the saplings. Once, Vallalar had to go to Karunguzhi. At that time, the devotees forgot their duty and started playing cards. As they got fully engaged in the game, a cow ate all the plants. Vallalar, during his return, heard about the incident and consoled the people that the time was yet to ripe for them.

A scholar who become a follower of Sanmargh (Sanmargh – the path advocated by Vallalar)

Karanapattu S M Kandasamy Pillai was a learned person, a great scholar, musician, poet and had great affinity on Tamil language. He was suffering with a unique disease that he got fainted often. All sorts of treatments failed. He came to know about Vallalar and hence he came and requested Vallalar to cure him. Vallalar not only cured him by giving Vibhuti (holy ash), but also accepted him as his disciple. Since then, he started propagating about Vallalar, his greatness, his principles, etc. He also followed the various disciplines advocated by Vallalar (such as avoidance of killing animals, non intake of non vegetarian food, feeding the poor etc) scrupulously and remained a pure sanmarghi next to Thozhuvur Velayudha Mudaliar.

He wrote “ Sarithira Keerthanai”, “Sarguru Venpa Andhathi”, “Gurunesa venpa”, “Siddhivilasa Namavali”, etc., composed several songs on Vallalar, compiled and published them as “prabhandha thirattu”. He also compiled entire “Thiruvarutpa” in a single book and published in 1924. In this way, Kandasamy pillai spent his life in the service of Vallalar and got his Grace.

Mark of a pure Master

Once, Vallalar was talking with Koodalur Ayyasamy pillai standing in the sunlight. At that time Vallalar asked, “What is the mark of a pure Master?’ Ayyasamiy Pillai could not answer and hence remained silent. Vallalar himself replied, “Pure master’s body will not have any shadow”. Vallalar’s shadow could not be seen and thus we can know his greatness and the level of his attainment.

The image that could not be captured

Once, some devotees brought one, Mr. Masilamani Mudaliar from Chennai for taking photo of Vallalar. The photographer tried eight times, but the image of Vallalar could not be captured. Only his white dress was seen in the photos. It is quite natural that Vallalar’s image could not be photographed as his body is an embodiment of light.

Tamil is the Father Language

Once a mutt chief came to Vallalar, got his doubts on Sanskrit cleared and told Vallalar “Tamil is a good language, but Sanskrit is the mother of all languages in the world”. Vallalar replied instantaneously, “Sanskrit is the mother of all languages, but Tamil is the father of all languages”.

Result of Jeevakarunyam (compassion towards beings)

One day Vallalar called Arunachala Padayachi and Venkatachala Padayachi and told “If you stop taking non vegetarian food, the yield in your field will become five times that of the previous season”. They too heeded the advice and stopped non vegetarian food. That year they got five times yield as blessed by Vallalar and they became rich. Hence they happily donated a part of the harvest to Dharmasalai.

The extent of compassion

Once, some of the devotees of Ayya were discussing about the extent of compassion. As they were discussing, two people argued about compassion. One said compassion is showing mercy towards all living beings and the other, compassion is showing mercy towards both living beings and plants. Ayya asked them if they knew about the extent of compassion and narrated a story to explain the same. One day two elderly people, who followed compassion as their principle, were walking alongside the road. One of them stepped on the solid clay by mistake and it broke into two. By seeing this, the other person fell down unconscious. Once he came back to his senses he said that the nature of the clay was lost as it broke into two., So, he got worried and fell unconscious. Such shall be the extent of compassion. By this the devotees realized that the compassion is meant not just for the human beings, animals and plants but also for the inanimate objects.

Snake spellbound by Ayya's power and Ayya's compassion towards the snake

A Chettiar from Kurinjipadi used to travel to Vadalur every Tuesday to take Ayya's darshan. One day when he sat near the tree for nature's call, a snake came hissing to bite him. Scared by the snake, he uttered Ayya's name thrice and ordered in the name of Ayya that the snake should become immobile. As he did that, the snake became still. When the Chettiar came to take Ayya's darshan on Tuesday, Ayya told the Chettiar to release the order as the snake was still without food for three days. Realizing about Ayya's great compassion, the Chettiar did as told by Ayya, the snake crept and went inside the hole.

Ayya's explanation for Samaveda (Third of the four vedas)

Once, when Ayya was conducting a discourse, four priests approached Ayya with a thought of testing Ayya's knowledge in vedas. While discoursing, Ayya explained the exact portions in Samaveda which the four priests decided to test Him. Astonished by Ayya's wide knowledge, compassion, knowledge and power, the four priests went with a great bliss.

Ayya's guidance for his devotees

Venkatesa Iyer, a lawyer who lived in Viruthachalam used to go to Vadalur along with his wife every Saturday night for participating in a discourse that would be held on Sundays. They used to walk in an unmanned path in the forest during nights for nearly 3 miles where they were accompanied by two torch lights in front of them as a guide. Seeing this miracle, Venkatesa Iyer realized that Ayya was guarding him. He left his job and decided to live in Vadalur along with his wife. They spent their entire life at the holy feet of Ayya.

Ayya's blessing for a progeny

One Mr. Mayuram Sivarama Iyer, a subordinate officer lived in Reddy Chavadi which lies between Puducherry and Manjakuppam. He was a very rich person. But his wife did not have children due to bad planetary positions. So Sivarama Iyer went to Ayya and requested to bless him with a progeny. Ayya told Sivarama Iyer to construct a tavern in Pulavanur that lies on the banks of the river Pennai which lies between Vadalur and Panruti and blessed him saying that he will be blessed with a child soon by God's grace. Sivarama Iyer did as advised by Ayya and he was soon blessed with a baby boy by God's grace.

The King of Verses

Once Venkata reddiar’s brother Purushothama reddiar, due to some quarrel, came out of house and was staying at Madurai Thirugnana Sambanda Swamigal Mutt. Venkata Reddiar complained about this to Vallalar. Vallalar sent a letter to Madurai Sannithanam (Mutt’s chief saint) requesting him for sending Purushotham back with good advice.

When the letter reached the mutt, there was Thirukalukundram Thiruchittrambala Gnaniar swamigal, who was well aware of the greatness of Vallalar and also was another person by name Kanakkil Avadhani (A person who can perform innumerable tasks at the same time) Devipattinam Muthusamy. After reading the letter, Madurai Sannithanam sent back Purushotham as per the letter and also showed the letter to the other two present there.

On reading the letter, the Avadhani commented that the letter revealed ignorance and that no sort of language proficiency was displayed. In this regard, Avadhani and Gnaniar swamigal got into an argument. Finally they sent a letter to Vallalar requesting him to send a letter of a grammatical nature. Initially Vallalar was reluctant to do so. But as the people around him persuaded, he just wrote few lines, asked Velayudha Mudaliar to complete and send the same. On receiving the reply which was written in a very high language, the Avadhani could not make out anything. But the Avadhani could not accept his defeat. He told that such letters could be read only by those who wrote them. Hence, he also wrote a letter and challenged that Vallalar would not be able to understand that letter. Vallalar not only interpreted the verse, but also gave a new meaning to the verse, which was not known to Avadhani himself. Avadhani’s mind changed. He realized the greatness of Vallalar and apologized for his ignorance.

The Graceful Master who took over his disciple

Thirunarunkundram was a small village near Thirukkovilur. In that village, Kalpattu Ayya was leading an ascetic life in his small hut, which was over a hill. In his meditation, he once got a vision that his Master will come in person to take over him. The Omniscient Lord Vallalar went there and calmly said, “Kalpattu Ayya! For fulfilling your penance, I came here as told by God, open your eyes”. The words resounded as magic spell in the ears of Kalpattu Ayya. He suddenly felt an unknown ecstasy and opened his eyes. There stood Vallalar as form filled with Compassion and Grace. Thus the Master took over his disciple.

Effect of envy

There were several people who followed principles of Vallalar. They used to visit in crowds. On seeing this, a person Venkatasamy Naicker grew jealous and he started frightening those people. He used to tell Sanmargh people “I am getting complaints that you people were trying to enslave innocent people and imposing your principles on them. I may have to take action against you and you will be going to jail”. In this manner, he talked for fourteen days. Having thus earned the wrath of God, he himself got accused and imprisoned on the fifteenth day.

Youngster’s mind change

A Muslim guy of about twenty years age, was talking ill of Vallalar. Once he applied oil over his body, stuck cotton over it, came to Vallalar, told that he was having wounds all over his body and requested Vallalar to cure him. Vallalar told him it will be cured within few days. The guy retorted telling that he will cure himself immediately and tried to take off the cotton. But, wherever the cotton was there, wounds and boils appeared. The youngster realized his mistake and prostrated before Vallalar asking for his pardon and remedy. Vallalar asked him to take bath in the well at Dharmasalai meditating about “Arulperunjothi” (The great light of Grace – The Ultimate God). On doing so, he got cured. Thenceforth the youngster became pure vegetarian and also a follower of Vallalar

Clearing the doubts of Brahmins from Andhra Pradesh

Once, two Brahmins came from Andhra Pradesh to get their doubts cleared. They met Vallalar and asked why they could not attain even after doing whatsoever told in the scripts. In order to clear their doubt, Vallalar took a coin and held it in his hand for some time. It got melt and dripped down. On seeing this, the Brahmins told that it is easier to control mind but not the elements. Vallalar told that it is easier to control the elements but not the mind. He displayed that mastery. Getting their doubts cleared, the Brahmins realized the power and capacity of Vallalar, bowed to him and returned.

Darshan of Chidambaram at Vadalur

On special occasions, Vadalur people used to go to Chidambaram for Darshan in groups. On one such occasion, Vallalar delayed the trip. Some visitors started without him. The others felt ill at ease that they have missed the Chidambara Darshan. Understanding this, Vallalar asked to put a curtain at middle of Dharmasalai and shown Chidambara Darshan at Vadalur itself. All the visitors happily got Darshan without any crowd problem at Vadalur by the Grace of Vallalar.

The great compassion of the lord

Once, because of chithirai month’s heat, some people at Dharmasalai got fever. On seeing their suffering, Vallalar asked each one, “Will you give me your fever?” After asking all those who got fever, he went inside a room and came back with high temperature. Those who were sick got relieved fully.

Rain during ‘Chithirai’ (April-May) month

Once during ‘Chithirai’ month, those who stayed at Dharmasalai suffered due to excessive heat and dryness, as there was no rain at all. Having known this, Vallalar asked to bring water and pour it in his feet. Within a short time, the sky became dark and it rained.

On hearing about this instance, people at a village called Pudupettai, requested Vallalar to visit their village. Vallalar also went where he was shown the dry wells and the water scarcity prevailing there. Vallalar asked them to bring six pots of water and pour them over his head. The sky grew dark. As Vallalar opened his eyes and saw the sky, the sky opened and it poured and poured till the wells become full. The water is sweet and quenching thirst even now.

In the same village, once a house got fire and people were trying to put out the fire. Vallalar just waved his cloth and the fire got extinguished. Again in the same village, a person, out of affection towards Vallalar, cut all the bamboo trees at his house backyard and gave to Dharmasalai. The bamboos grew again.

Once when Vallalar was at open space, it rained heavily. Those who went along with could not find any shelter and got drenched fully. But Vallalar did not get wet at all.

The multilingual expert’s realization

Pinagapani mudaliar was proficient in five languages. He was not having good impression about Vallalar and Dharmasalai. Once he came to Vadalur to show off his knowledge and test the language skill of Vallalar. Vallalar wanted him to realize the truth and hence told him about acquiring expertise in six languages. For this, Vallalar just held the hand of Mudaliar’s five year old son for some time, who instantly got proficiency in six languages. Then Vallalar asked Mudaliar to get his doubts cleared from his son. Seeing this, Mudaliar realized the greatness of Vallalar and apologized for his act.

Miracles of the Master mystic

Sometimes, Vallalar will be at penance at Dharmasalai at noon. During such times, a fire sphere shall appear between his head and the sun.

Once Devanatham pillai’s son Ayyasamy got an ulcer at his thigh and suffered because of it. Having come to know about it, Vallalar gave some vibhuti (holy ash) along with a medical verse. On applying the vibhuti and following the terms of the medical verse, the ulcer got healed.

Previously, once Ayyasamy fell sick that he was about to die. Devanatham pillai prayed to Vallalar. Vallalar, who was teaching at Dharmasalai, went at the same time to Devanatham’s house at Koodalur, applied Holy Ash at the forehead of Ayyasamy and returned. That very night Ayyasamy got cured. The next day, Devanatham pillai went with his son to Vadalur. Seeing him, Vallalar told him not to tell about his arrival on previous day to those who were at Vadalur. Later, it came to light that Vallalar was at two places at the same time and everyone was astonished.

Once, Vallalar went to Thiruvathigai for worship. There lot of people gathered to see him. As the crowd was more, Vallalar appeared to people at many places at the same time.

Once, Vallalar wanted to have a stroll alone. Hence he stopped those who started to accompany him. But they did not heed his words and started following him. But Vallalar was suddenly seen at a distance. When they started running to get him, Vallalar was seen at a longer distance.

A similar incident took place near Kallangulam when Vallalar was walking alone. A man approached him for getting his advice. Immediately Vallalar was seen at a distance. As the man tried to go near Vallalar, he appeared at a much longer distance. The man got tired and had to stay back.

Once, at Dharmasalai, the food prepared was lesser and more people had come for food. The person, who was in charge, appraised Vallalar about the situation. Vallalar came and served food by his own hand. Even after all people ate, some food remained.

Once, the stock of rice got exhausted at Dharmasalai. Shanmugam pillai told this to Vallalar. Vallalar closed his eyes for some time and then told that they will get the required items on the next day. The next day a person brought three carts full of rice and one cart with the food items, saying that he got the orders at his dream the previous night.

Loss due to greed

While Vallalar was at Chennai, a poor Christian was a devotee of him. His family was suffering in poverty and knowing the same, Vallalar gave him the power to turn two coins into silver daily. With the silver, the Christian could manage his family. But the person grew greedy. He thought that if he could make gold instead of silver, he can live in luxury. He told this to Vallalar. Vallalar took the person’s walking stick fitted with silver cap, kept it in his hand for some time, turned the silver cap into gold and shown him. But he threw that cap into the well at Dharmasalai and told the Christian to return saying, “Everything will happen”. The Christian returned to Chennai but thereafter he could not even turn the coin into silver piece as he was doing earlier. Due to his greed, he lost even what he was having previously.

Mercy to thieves

Vallalar came from Koodalur to Kullanchavadi by night and stayed there at an inn’s outside. It was a cold night and seeing him, a police man gave him a blanket and stayed along with him. At midnight, a thief tried to pull the blanket. Vallalar turned to a side so that the thief can take the blanket easily. But the police man caught the thief. Vallalar told the policeman to leave him as he was doing so only because of his poverty. He advised the thief not to steal henceforth and set him free.

Once a government official at Manjakuppam Mr. Ramachandra Mudaliar, requested Vallalar to visit and stay at his native town for some days. While travelling at night, two bandits attacked the cart. The cart driver ran out of fear. The bandits demanded Mudaliar to take off his diamond ring. Vallalar asked, “Is it so urgent?” The bandits raised their stick to beat Vallalar. The next moment their hands got paralyzed and also they lost their eye sight. The bandits realized Vallalar’s greatness and their mistake. They begged his pardon, assured that they’ll leave robbery and took their way.

The Desireless Alchemist

Devanayagam’s father, who was a yogi, before his death, said to Devanayagam “Whoever comes with a cloth over his head and a stick and enquires you whether this is the Samadhi of your father, will be your Guru”. Vallalar enquired in the same manner and thus Devanayagam became his disciple.

Devanayagam was interested in alchemy and had lost wealth in acquiring such knowledge. Vallalar turned an iron plate into gold before Devanayagam, but thrown it away saying Devanayagam that such a thing can be done only by the person who is void of desires and hence asked him to drop that desire. Devanayagam changed his mind as per Vallalar’s advice.

Once, Vallalar took Devanayagam to Chenchi hill. Vallalar was tirelessly going around, but soon Devanayagam got tired and hungry. Vallalar asked him to rest in shadow, went some distance and came back. While coming back, he was having a big ‘laddu’ and water in a vessel. He asked Devanayagam to eat the laddu and drink the water. Once it was done, Vallalar took the vessel, said he will return back it, went some distance and came back. While returning, the vessel was not with him.

Brahmathandiga Yoga

Brahmathandiga yoga is the meditation done in between two hot iron vessels filled with burning charcoals. While Ayya was in deep meditative state in Brahmathandiga yoga – a Priest entered ayya’s room without notice and accidently his leg touched the vessel. Subsequently a piece of charcoal was thrown on both Ayya and the priest. Immediately Priest tried to control the flame but got burnt in his hand. On the contrary, the flame did not cause anything for Ayya. Then ayya cured his burns immediately.

Lame Goat listening to Aiyya’s speech

Once a lame goat came and listened ayya’s speech regularly without fail using its left ears. Once the speech is over, it went around the Siddhivalagam using its imbalanced legs along with the crowd. Due to past karmas, many beings take birth as animals instead of getting human birth. Ayya requested the people to give food (leafs) and water regularly to the lame goat.

Avataniyar suppression of the ego

People were always excited to hear ayya’s divine speech at Mettukuppam (siddhivalagam) and came in massive crowd. The surprising thing is here - the people who were sitting nearby and the people who were at distance always heard the speech with same audibility. People could hear Ayya’s voice irrespective of the distance.

Once, a Sadhavathani (a person who does 100 tasks at the same time) came to the gathering. People who were listening to Ayya’s speech did not see him. Understanding this situation, Sadhavathani immediately asked ayya – “I did not get seat though I am blessed with talent (Vitthai) and enlightment like Ayya”. Immediately the others who listened to this provided him the requested seat.

After getting the seat, he slowly progressed close to Ayya. Ayya saw this and asked him “So you got the seat from the gathering”. “Not earlier” replied Sadhavathani. Then Ayya asked “what is the tense of Earlier?” He said “Past”. Then ayya questioned him “what is measurement of Time?” He was not knowing the meaning and stood helplessly. Ayya explained, “Time is period taken to stacker 1008 red lotus petals till the end with a needle” and told him “the time you didn’t get the seat and got the seat are all present only”.

Title 1

The landlord of Vettavalam had 2 wives. One wife was possessed by a demon. The other was affected by dropsy. The landlord tried various medicines, various magical methods to cure them, sacrificed various animals in various temples but in vain.

One of his servants told him about Vallalar. As the landlord was fed up with various failures he was not very enthusiastic about this. He decided to test Vallalar. Two chairs were kept in the hall. He told his servant that he will believe in Vallalar if he would sit on the chair he had in his mind. Vallalar came and sat on the exact chair that was chosen by the landlord. The landlord understood the capability of Aiyya, regretted for his mistake and asked Aiyya to forgive him.

Aiyya saw the landlord’s first wife and ordered the demon possessing her to get away. Immediately the demon obeyed Aiyya’s order and went away. He cured his second wife by giving sacred ash thrice. The landlord’s joy knew no bounds. As per Aiyya’s instruction he banned animal sacrifice throughout his land. His family became vegetarian too. He even stopped killing snakes inside his territory. He arranged a snake charmer to catch the snakes inside his territory and left them outside.

Ayya's wide knowledge in Rasabaspam (Powder that helps longevity)

One day an Islamic devotee came to see Ayya and told Him secretly the herb required for making (Rasabaspam) but Ayya said in a louder tone in such a way everybody could hear, "for making (rasabaspam) there are three more herbs required apart from the one you said and they are these things". When he heard this, he felt ashamed of himself and bent down his head.

One Mr. Ramakrishnan of Manjakuppam was a disciple of Vallalar. He daily used to visit Aiyya’s discourse in the evening and used to return late in the night. Ramakrishnan was afraid of darkness. Whenever he felt fear in his mind regarding darkness, by Aiyya’s grace it will appear as if a person were walking in front of him. This person will be there till Ramakrishnan reaches his house. If Ramakrishnan tried to see who is walking in front of him nothing would be visible to his naked eye.

A merchant’s assistant in Salem was affected very much by Tonsils. He said to Aiyya about this and Aiyya cured him by giving sacred ash.

While Aiyya was providing a discourse a person went through that area. His face was swollen due to some disease in the eye. Aiyya took pity on him and asked him to tie with Rasthali fruit ( a type of banana available in South India). He did this and his face was cured.

Ayya clarifying Kanchi Sankaracharya

Once when Sankarachariyar of Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam came to Chennai, he asked the devotees if anyone well-versed in Sanskrit was available to clarify his doubts in Sanskrit language. One of the devotees mentioned about Ayya and His deep knowledge in Sanskrit. As per Sankarachariyar's request, Ayya and Thozhuvur Velayuda Mudaliar went to see Sankarachariyar. At Ayya's instruction, Thozhuvur Velayuda Mudaliar clarified Sankarachariyar's doubts in Sanskrit. When Ayya's disciple himself was able to clarify the doubts that Sankarachariyar had, we can understand the greatness and depth of Ayya's knowledge in Sanskrit language.

Shedding Fishermen’s Ignorance

Two fishermen held their nets and came by the side of Ayya’s house in Mettukkuppam. Ayya asked them “Whether you throw the small net or big net to catch the fish?”. Fishermen replied “Small net”. Ayya told them “How many lives will you kill to feed one person? It is not your mistake. When there is nobody to eat non-vegetarian, there is no killing of animals. Hereafter, please don’t do fishing for your living and do some other job”. They agreed to it before Ayya but continued to do fishing again. They threw the net in the stream for fishing but the net broke into pieces and mixed with water. Fishermen realized their mistake, asked for apologies to Ayya and started doing some other job.

Vallalar’s discourse on Siva Purana

One day two poets came to Vallalar and requested Him “Please tell the explanations of the first Siva Purana of Thiruvasagam (Eighth thirumurai)”. Vallalar asked, “Can tell. Do you have patience to hear?”. Then when he started explaining the sixty four properties of the first syllable “Na” of the first word “NaMaSiVaYa” for about 2 hours, his close disciple Thozhuvur Velayudha Mudaliar himself lost his patience to listen further and we could understand the state of the two poets. They were surprised to hear the detailed explanations of Vallalar, accepted that they don’t have the patience to hear such a clear explanation of Vallalar and left.

Saving the Magicians

To get the Ayya’s blessings, four magicians who are Karma Yogis came to see Him came to Mettukkuppam at around 12 Midnight. On their way, angel Kali frightened them showing the giant shape of her. Magicians told her “We would fetter you” and came. Karma Yogis, who came to Mettukkuppam, got the blessings of Ayya. They told Ayya about the Kali Devi’s threat and the punishment they wanted to give her. Ayya told them “Don’t do anything. Tell her you came to visit us”. On their way back, they told her the same; Giant-sized Kali Devi became very small-sized and left humbly.

Everything is God’s Grace (or) We Should Try Hard to Reach God

Swami and other devotees were sitting and talking in the porch of Cuddalur Appasamy Chettiar’s house. At that time, two philosophers came to Swami and told Him, “We have an argument. Please help us in arriving at a solution”. Swami asked “Yes, what is the argument about?”. One of them told, “Swami, I tell him that Without God’s Grace, not even an atom can move. But he says that we have to put all our efforts to reach God and denies my point. This is our argument”. Swami, to help them understand, narrated the following story.

There was a naked Saint walking in a street. One person thought that ladies walk around that place and it is bad to roam naked in that place. So, he threw a stone on the saint. Another person saw that this Saint is desireless and gave a fruit to the saint. On seeing these two events, the third person got confused and took all of them to the court. The judge asked the Saint, “Who threw stone on you?” and the Saint replied, “The one who gave me fruit threw the stone on me”. Then Judge asked “Who gave you fruit” and the saint replied “The one who threw stone on me gave me the fruit”. So, everyone understood that this Saint fully comprehends that “Everything is God’s Grace” and he doesn’t differentiate between the one who gave him the fruit & the one who threw stone on him.

After telling this story, Swami told “For the one who sees everything as ONE without any discrimination, ‘Everything is God’s Grace’ is the truth. Others should try very hard to reach God”. Thus, Swami clarified their doubts.

Cobra’s death after biting Ayya

Swami lived in Appasamy Chettiar’s house for some time. One day, He was walking in the plantain garden along with other devotees and He was joyfully delighted by the beauty of the plantain garden for some time. Then He stood near a plantain tree. At that time, a cobra bit Swami’s head. On seeing this, Chettiar got scared and Ayya told him, “Don’t get scared. Sacred ash can act as medicine and cure this”. Then Swami applied sacred ash in the bitten place in His head. Cobra, which bit Swami, fell dead and the devotees were surprised to see this.

Master of Masters

Appasamy Chettiar’s elder brother Ramasamy Chettiar had cancer in his tongue and was suffering a lot. None of the medical treatments could give any fruitful solution to him. Appasamy Chettiar took his elder brother to Ayya and explained Him his brother’s sufferings. He requested Ayya to cure his brother’s disease. Ayya gave Sacred Ash to him and asked him to wear three times a day. His brother, as per Ayya’s instructions, wore Sacred Ash and the cancer got cured completely.

Once, Ayya sat in deep meditation in Appasamy Chettiar’s house in Cuddalur. All the other devotees sat outside in the porch. One person, who looked like a Saint quickly crossed the devotees and got into Ayya’s room. Devotees were curious to find out who the person was and went in. But they couldn’t find anyone but a laddu near Ayya. They enquired Ayya about the person. Ayya told them “He was a Siddhar and he would have crossed Kasi by this time. This laddu was given by him only”. The devotees got surprised to see the greatness of the Siddhar and the greatness of their Guru (Ayya) who was visited by that Siddhar.

Greatness of God’s Grace

One person wearing coat & suit and calling himself a Sage, was wandering with a cane in his hand. Everyone was afraid of talking against him or to defy him as he was very rough. So, people used to call him “Rogue Sage”. One day, when Peruman came by the side of Rogue Sage’s place and sat in one of the devotee’s porch. At that time, a goat gave birth to a lamb which was not having a leg. The lamp was struggling to drink milk from its mother as it couldn’t stand properly. Peruman shed tears on seeing this. The rogue sage asked Peruman whether the lamb would get the leg if He cries. Peruman replied “If God’s grace is there, it may happen”. Rogue Sage told Peruman “Let us see” roughly and sat there. Peruman, with full compassion, sang 10 songs on God. Before he finished the songs, the lamb got its leg and happily drank mother’s milk. The rogue sage threw away his pride and indifference along with his Coat & Suit. He fell on Peruman’s legs and became a real sage.

Benefit of Compassion upon living beings

One by name, Amavasasai, ate dead oxen for his living. Swami asked him to bury them and not to eat them. After sometime, Swami told him not to eat any other non-veg food and to eat only vegetarian food. Amavasai told Swami that he would require atleast eight Annas per day to eat veg food and for other expenses. Swami tied eight Annas in a yellow cloth and gave it to Amavasai. Swami told him, “Keep this safe and you will get Eight Annas daily.”

As per Swami’s words, Amavasai kept it safe and he got Eight Annas daily. He could quit eating non-vegetarian and also got eight Annas daily. It was the benefit resulted out of Compassion towards all living beings.

Extreme Faith of the Devotee in Swami

A Chettiyar from Sevalai Village was suffering from Dyspepsia for 12 years. He has heard of Swami and came to Him. He adored Swami and requested Him to cure his disease. Swami asked him to pray to God. Chettiyar told Him “You are God to me” in full faith. Swami gracefully accepted his faith and cured his disease with sacred ash.

Peruman Satisfying His Devotee

As Kesava Reddiyar, had selfless love for Vallal Peruman, whenever he talks to someone, he used to mention Vallalar and his teachings only. He had a secret wish in his mind that Peruman should come and eat food in his house once. He was yearning for this opportunity for so many days.

Peruman, who can only be held by love, wished to fulfill Kesava Reddiyar’s desire and went to his house one night without informing him. On seeing Him, Reddiyar, who initially got astonished, adored and welcomed Peruman. Peruman said, “I have come to dine as you desired”. Reddiyar, who wanted to give delicious food to Peruman, regretted that he could not give Him good food as he had only Dal squash & rasam to give. Peruman gracefully told him, “Why are you worried. Mother’s Mercy

Once, the Saint returned late from Thiruvottiyur after his worship. As it was late he did not want to wake his brother’s wife. He lied down on the verandah with hunger. The mother goddess of Thiruvottiyur, Vadivudainayagi was unable to bear the hunger of her son. So, she came in the form of his brother’s wife and fed him. After a while his brother’s wife woke and came with the food, now Vallalar was surprised and asked her “ You just came now and fed me!! Why again?”. To this she replied that she came just then as she had slept. Then Vallalar, through his insight, realized that it was mother Vadivudainayagi who had fed him.

Sacred Sand

Once, Saint Vallalar, along with His devotees, came to the seashore in Thiruvottiyur where the jeeva samadhi of Saint Pattinathar was located. An elderly lady, a devotee there, told Vallalar that she had a doubt for a long time and asked for the meaning of the verse written by Pattinathar

“The sand particles in Thiruvottiyur are nothing but sacred ash”.

Immediately Vallalar gave a handful of the sand to the devotee, asked her to close her hands for a moment and then to open it. When she opened her hands, to everybody’s surprise, all the sand particles had turned into shivalingams. While she asked for an explanation, a practical demonstration was given by Aiyya for that verse which was well understood by her and the devotees. Everybody praised the saint.
